VNU - HUS valedictorian in 2021 and his 3.95/4 GPA

With a GPA of 3,95/4, Nguyễn Tiến Đạt, a student of Chemistry talent program class - Cohort K65 became the latest valedictorian of Vietnam National University - University of Science (VNU - HUS).

Coming from Thanh Hoá, Nguyễn Tiến Đạt was a student specialized in Chemistry at Lam Sơn High School for the Gifted. He developed his interest in natural science subjects, especially Chemistry, in his secondary school. Lessons on chemical compounds sparked his curiosity and desire to learn more. Đạt received a first-place award in a city-level Chemistry exam and a second-place award in the provincial Chemistry exam in Thanh Hóa.

He earned a second-place award in a provincial Chemistry exam in 2017, when he was in his high school years.

Upon being asked about his decision to enroll in VNU - HUS, Đạt said that the reason was the fact that the university had a long history of achievements and leading teachers in the field of Chemistry.

He encountered a lot of difficulties in his freshman year at the university because of the changes in environment and study methods. The Chemistry talent program had many courses in English, adding further problems to a student who was more specialized in natural science than in foreign languages.

The talent program class had many gifted students with in-depth knowledge, which was a motivation for Đạt to make a breakthrough. Whenever he encountered an issue in learning, he immediately sought aid from his teachers and his peers.

Đạt enjoyed Chemistry lab lessons more than anything. Chemistry is an experimental subject, so experiments helped him better understand what was taught in theoretical hours. In his second year, Đạt asked to experiment with his teachers in the school’s laboratory. He performed simple tasks, such as processing chemical reaction samples and participating in the research topics of the laboratory.

Đạt’s most favorite subjects were Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry because he can learn about the science of elements, molecular bonds, and ambient compounds, which in turn explain natural patterns or pave the way for the discovery of new chemical compounds. Other analytical and theoretical subjects were also vital for him to equip him with the necessary knowledge, such as measurement and experiment methodologies.

According to Đạt, to score high in exams, he needed to avoid procrastination and be proactive in learning. He also actively sought textbooks on Chemistry and English to further improve his study.

English grew from his fear to his love. He determined that rather than as a subject, it was a tool for him to approach more advanced knowledge. Foreign documents helped him improve his vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing skills. Đạt listened to English every day to refine his listening reflex.

By the time Đạt graduated, he achieved a 7.0 IELTS certificate.

Đạt joined a student exchange program with Nanyang Technological University in his junior year. To him, this was a valuable time to accumulate knowledge because of the opportunity to study and research in a foreign university, to meet foreign teachers and research groups.

Through his own effort, Đạt received a myriad of scholarships such as Odon Vallet 2019, UOP Honeywell 2019, and Mitsubishi UFJ 2020… He was also awarded a third-place prize at a school-level scientific research event in 2020.

Đạt had failed several times doing his graduation thesis. His research topic was “Synthesis and study of nickel dithiocarbamate complexes containing anthracene rings”. He spent one year on this topic, conducted experiments after experiments, synthesizing chemical compounds from different chemical compounds, with many new chemical compounds without a clearly defined creation process.

Every time Dat make a mistake, he carefully recorded it in his notebook. Chemical compounds were not available all the time, so he had to take advantage of every moment he could spend at the chemical laboratory. He gained an insurmountable amount of knowledge through trials and errors and reading international publications. He finished his data gathering for the thesis at the beginning of his senior year.

After many revisions, he received a score of 9.7 in his graduation thesis and became the valedictorian of VNU - HUS with an overall GPA of 3.95/4.

He acknowledged that Chemistry still has many new and unexplored problems. This was the motivation for him to move forward in his path. Currently, Đạt has applied for scholarships to study abroad and is waiting for the result. He hopes to have the opportunity to further his study abroad.
