On March 4, 2021, the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) published the results of the world university rankings for 51 disciplines, grouped into five broad subject areas at 1,500 higher education institutions from 85 countries and regions with about 14,000 training programs.
Among VNU’s five ranked disciplines in this ranking, Business & Management Studies was, for the first time, listed in the table together with 4 previously ranked disciplines including Computer Science and Information Systems, Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics & Astronomy.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject are based on the following four indicators: Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Citations per Paper, and H-index (the productivity and the impact of the scientific publications of the faculty).
QS's ranking indicators emphasize the contribution and impact of the training quality of a broad subject area on society (through responses from academics and employers) as well as the contributions to scientific research activities (through Citations per Paper and H-index). The weights of the ranking indicators applied to different subject areas are not the same.

- VNU’s Business and Management Studies was the only academic discipline in Vietnam ranked by QS. Though ranked for the first time, the discipline was listed in Group 501 - 550 globally out of 1,161 participating educational institutions, with pretty high Citations per Paper and H-index of 61.6 and 65.1, respectively.
- Computer Science and Information Systems dropped from Group 501-500 (2020) to Group 601 – 650 and ranked 2nd in Vietnam, after Hanoi University of Science and Technology (2021) as QS expanded the number of ranked educational institutions from 600 to 650 out of 1,570 participating educational institutions in this subject area. This result was due to the remarkable increase in the score of Citations per Paper (18.6%) and that of H-index (1.6%), which could not make up for the decrease in the scores of Academic Reputation and Employer Reputation by 23.6% and 3.0%, respectively.
- Mathematics remained in Group 401 – 450 globally and 1st in Vietnam as in 2020, followed by Hanoi University of Science and Technology, with a slight increase in the scores of Academic Reputation (5.1%), Citations per Paper (1.9%), and H-index (6.3%); and a decrease by 8.5% in the score of Employer Reputation.
- Compared to 2020, Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering regained its position in Group 451-500 globally among 520 higher education institutions. The 2021 rankings show a significant increase in the score of the H-index (18.7%) and a slight rise in the score of Citations per Paper (1.9%).
- Physics & Astronomy, the only discipline in Vietnam ranked in 2021, climbed to Group 501-550 globally compared to Group 551-600 in 2020 with an increase in the scores of Academic Reputation and H-index by 3.2% and 1.9%, respectively, while Citations per Paper and Employer Reputation decreased inconsiderably by 0.3% and 2.9%, respectively.
