9X Lecturer defends his doctoral thesis with 18 international publications

Recently, post-graduate student Pham Thanh Luan, born in 1990, lecturer of the Faculty of Physics, HUS, has successfully defended his doctoral thesis. Remarkably, the post-graduate student has 23 articles related to the thesis, of which he is the main author of 10 ISI articles, 4 belonging to emerging group ESCI of ISI, 2 Scopus, 4 belong to national and international magazines. Besides, this post-graduate student also co-authored 2 ISI articles and 1 article in an International Conference Proceedings. This is a much higher accomplishment than the latest Regulations on Admission and Training for Doctoral level issued by the Ministry of Education and Training in 2017 which requires only one international publication.

The thesis of post graduate student Pham Thanh Luan is entitled : “Developing new methods in processing and analyzing potential field data”, belonging  to the field of Geophysics. The work was completed at HUS, VNU under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Duc Thanh and Dr. Le Huy Minh.

Luan said: “Analysing or processing documents on magnet and gravity plays a crucial role in researching the earth’s crust structure and interpretinggeographical structures as well as seeking and testing minerals. Nowadays, methods of processing and analyzing documents on magnet and gravity are still used frequently and widely as one of the fundamental methods in terrestrial survey or examination. There are other methods such as: defining horizontal boundaries and defining the depth of density division boundaries or magnetic boundaries. However, these methods still have certain limitations. Therefore, developing new methods or  improving existing ones is of necessity.

Luan’s thesis aims to develope new techniques, or set of suitable methods in order to enhance the efficiency of processing and analyzing potential field data. Along with that is building some software programs from suggested methods or set of methods.

The task set out in the thesis requires the researcher to have a profound knowledge about the strengths and weaknesses of the methods previously proposed by other scientists, thereby suggesting new methods or improving already existing procedures. Relentless effort paid off when the research results were published in national and international  magazines. Up to the Thesis Defense Day, Luan had had 23 articles (2 were accepted to be published), 18 of which were published in magazines like SCIE, ESCI and Scopus.

“I was very lucky to receive all the support, dedicated supervision and strict guidance from my two instructors, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Duc Thanh and Dr. Le Huy Minh. They are leading experts in processing and analysing potential field data so the knowledge they imparted are incredibly precious lessons. Along with their guidance, I was also blessed with support from numerous international experts and colleagues.” – the 9X postgraduate student shared his thoughts.

For his outstanding research, the postgraduate student was given special permission to bypass the independent review process in his Doctoral Thesis Defense. The results presented in the thesis were aslo given high distinction scores by all 7 members of the VNU panel.

“The thesis is highly scientific topical and practical. This is a very innovative research results. With the enormous calculating work and the number of references and published works, Luan has proved to be a highly capable independent researcher” – Assoc. Prof. Cao Dinh Trieu, Vietnam Geophysics Science and Technology Association, thesis reviewer.”

“Luan has proposed various innovative methods and improved existing onesmethods, enhancing the efficiency of analyzing and processing potential field data, therefore the thesis was completed with high quality.” – Assoc. Prof. Dinh Van Toan, thesis reviewer.

The Faculty of Physics - HUS has more than 70 staff, with 47 lecturers including 4 Professors, 17 Associate Professors and 25 Doctors. 46/47 lecturers have Doctoral Degree or higher. Most faculty members were trained in advanced educational institutions in the US, Europe, Japan and Korea. Lecturers that were trained locally like Pham Thanh Luan often have numerous international publications.
