Vietnam’s Youngest Professor: Passion is the key to everything

Phạm Chiến Thắng (33), lecturer of the Faculty of Chemistry, VNU University of Science (VNU - HUS), was recently awarded the title of Associate Professor by the State Council for Professor Title. He became the youngest person to attain the title. He has 42 scientific articles published domestically and internationally.

Mr. Thắng was a Chemistry student of HUS High School for Gifted Students. He found his passion for Chemistry in 8th grade. After his graduation, he enrolled in VNU-HUS, Faculty of Chemistry for a Bachelor degree.

After graduating from the university in 2009, Mr. Thắng stayed in VNU-HUS, worked as a teacher in the Faculty of Chemistry while taking a postgraduate program there. After having earned his Master degree in 2012, Mr. Thắng went to Germany to study and research there, eventually succeeded in attaining the PhD title at Freie University, Berlin in 2016

Mr. Thắng returned to Vietnam to resume his teaching profession and research in the Faculty of Chemistry, VNU - HUS. Much like his colleagues, he devoted most of his time outside his job to Chemistry research.

After years of dedication, Mr. Thắng has published 42 scientific articles inside and outside Vietnam. He was the main author of 16 out of 42 published works.He mostly worked on “Multinuclear, multimetallic complexes based on acylthiourea ligands” and “transition metals complexes of biologically active chelating agents”.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Phạm Chiến Thắng appears to many as an easygoing and kindhearted individual. He gives an impression of a young student, chuckling a lot in a conversation, with some hints of shyness.

Mr. Thắng revealed the origin of his passion for Chemistry. It was in 8th grade, when he was studying in Hanoi Marie Curie school, he was intrigued by the phenomenon of color change in chemical reactions. It slowly grew on him. Chemistry teachers at HUS High School for Gifted Students further reinforced this long-time fascination.

"My homeroom teacher teaches Inorganic Subject at VNU - HUS. He is one of the top Chemists in Vietnam. I really enjoyed the way he taught me. Other teachers also instilled me the love for Chemistry. So I followed them after my graduation” - Mr. Thắng shared his past experience. He appreciated the luck and opportunity he had when he received support from his teachers, his peers, and his students.

“The title of Associate Professor is a testament to my personal development after I obtained my PhD degree. I will still remain as a teacher and researcher in the future. I had guidance from my peers, my teachers, and my colleagues, so I need to offer guidance to future generations as well” - Mr. Thắng expressed his thought.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Phạm Chiến Thắng has long considered the Faculty of Chemistry, VNU - HUS has his second home. He has good relationships with his teachers, colleagues, and his students, all there for their love of Chemistry.

According to the associate professor: “Many complain that Chemistry is rough, but you will find it interesting when you are really into it. The application of Chemistry has an immeasurable contribution to humanity. In the end, it is the passion that you need in doing everything. Passion is the key to everything.”
