Innovating Earth science to promote circular economy and sustainability

In the morning of February 11, 2022, the Hanoi Geoengineering 2022 International Symposium on "Earth Science Innovation, Circular Economy and Sustainability" took place at VNU-HUS.

Innovating Earth science to promote circular economy and sustainability

Hanoi Geoengineering International Symposium 2022 was jointly organized by VNU-HUS, Kyoto University (Japan), General Department of Meteorology and Hydrology and local partner universities, Council of Interdisciplinary Professors of Earth Science - Mines and universities and research institutes from Japan, Australia and the United States. This followed a series of 07 previous symposiums since 2003.

The Hanoi Geoengineering 2022 International Symposium was conducted both in-person and online due to Covid-19 pandemic conditions. Its aim was to propose and develop innovative solutions in Earth science to promote the circular economy and solve urgent environmental problems, contributing to sustainable development. There were 51 reports from local and international scientists, focusing on the following topics:

Innovating Earth science to promote circular economy and sustainability

- Earth science, geotechnical technology, eco-geology for ecological and circular economy development: environmental studies and climate change, environmental protection; environmental remediation; waste, wastewater and greenhouse gases reduction; disaster reduction and resilience to natural disasters; environmental and disaster recovery; resilience to natural disasters and green growth; sustainable development of infrastructure and geosystems; hydrological technology (wastewater management and water treatment), reducing microplastic pollution.

- Sustainable use of natural resources and circular economy: Renewing natural resources, environmentally friendly materials, green materials, renewable energy and clean energy (hydroelectricity, tidal , wind, solar and geothermal energy); sustainable exploitation and innovative use of traditional energies (coal, oil and gas); sustainable exploitation and use of natural resources, natural capital, biodiversity and ecosystems; eco-tourism, natural heritage conservation; integrated model of sustainable use of natural resources; distribution and use of natural resources.

- Solutions for circular economy and improving sustainability: scientific and technological solutions; institutional and policy solutions; capacity building and cooperation for sustainable development, sustainability, circular economy development and resilience; digital transformation solutions and innovative technologies (including: artificial intelligence, IoT, blockchain technology, data analysis).
