International symposium on "Environmentally friendly and appropriate technology in waste utilization and environmental rehabilitation in remote areas"

The opening ceremony of the international symposium on "Environmentally friendly and appropriate technology in waste utilization and environmental rehabilitation in remote areas" took place at VNU-HUS on the morning of August 15, 2022.

International symposium on Environmentally friendly and appropriate technology in waste utilization and environmental rehabilitation in remote areas

This symposium was organized within a framework of a  cooperation project between Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia) and 5 ASEAN countries (including: Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Laos and Vietnam). It would take place from August 15 to 20, 2022 in Hanoi and Quang Ninh, including in-depth discussing sessions and field trips at wastewater treatment plants, mine waste dumps, industrial parks, and aquaculture areas in Quang Ninh.

More than 50 delegates including scientists, lecturers, students, coordinators of NGOs, planners, managers and policy makers from Vietnam, Russia, Hong Kong. Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and Laos attended the conference, both in persons and via online streaming. They would be discussing environmental issues in remote areas where resources for environmental protection activities are limited, especially in places where waste sources are often dispersed and the community are not fully aware of these issues.

At the opening ceremony, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Quoc Binh - Vice Rector of VNU-HUS said: “This symposium is an opportunity for us to summarize the latest research results of the project and discuss how to implement and apply these results in the coming up activities. Accordingly, three main topics on environmental and agricultural issues in remote areas will be discussed:

  • Identify small-scale wastewater treatment plants as models with community participation suitable for remote and mountainous areas.
  • Use appropriate technologies, supporting tools (GIS, AI, drone…) in the design and implementation of projects.
  • Applying a number of appropriate products and technologies in recovering valuable components in the waste stream and treating and restoring the environment, especially in mining areas.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Quoc Binh affirmed that the workshop is a good opportunity for the participants to exchange updated professional knowledge, thereby offering solutions to deal with challenges in environmental issues. On that basis, the research results within the project will be of great value to solving environmental problems and improving the quality of life not only in Vietnam but in all countries in the network and in the world as well.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nataliya Shchegolkova from Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia expressed how she felt about attending a symposium in Vietnam.

In order to promote scientific research activities and international cooperation, the Faculty of Environment, VNU-HUS in combination with Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia implemented the project "Design and development of an interactive communication network between ASEAN - Russia in order to exchange technologies for sustainable agricultural development”, funded by the ASEAN-RUSSIAFoundation. Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Manh Khai, Dean of the Faculty of Environment would lead the Vietnamese team in a collaboration between scientists from VNU-HUS’s Faculty of Environment, Strong Research Group of "Green Environmental and Waste Recycling Technology - GEWUT"; Lomonosov University, Russia; Agroecouniversum Ltd., Hong Kong; Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand and some other universities from Laos, Philippines and Indonesia,...

According to Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Manh Khai, participating in the project would be a good opportunity for scientists, lecturers and students of the Faculty of Environment to exchange and learn from international experts. In particular, thanks to the project, VNU-HUS had received support to invest in equipment for online meeting rooms and laboratories for training and research.

The Project "ASEAN - Russia Interactive Communication Network for the Exchange of Innovative Technologies on Sustainable Agricultural Development":

  • The aim of the project was to teach students practical skills in assessing the environmental status of water bodies in agricultural areas and offering solutions to improve water quality for a particular water body.
  • Project duration: May 2022 - April 2023.
  • Expected results:
  • Technology solutions developed by students;
  • design ideas to treat specific water bodies, commercial proposals to local authorities.
