According to the results from UPM, the University of Natural Sciences (VNU) belongs to a research-oriented educational institution with 5-star standards. In addition, there are 3 more universities that are also under 5-star research-oriented educational institutions: University of Technology (VNU), Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Kasetsart University (Thailand)...

The UPM system employs the compare and contrast approach, whereby universities with loosely similar achievements are placed in the same group and assigned from 1-5 stars. On the basis of the traditional ranking methodology, UPM develops more typical university criteria in the 4.0 era such as Innovation, Innovation Ecosystem, Information Technology and Digital Resources.

UPM includes 8 groups of fields and 54 criteria. Every field has its own benchmark and weights, for a total of 1000 points. 8 groups of fields are: Strategic Management (5 criteria, weight: 6%), Education and Training (15 criteria, weight: 35%), Research (4 criteria, weight: 20%), Innovation (4 criteria, weight: 11%), Innovation Ecosystem (4 criteria, weight: 6%), IT and digital resources (10 criteria, weight: 10%), Internationalization level (9 criteria, weight: 6%) and Community Service (3 criteria, weight: 6%).

Indicators of every criteria and every field are compared and contrasted with benchmarks, providing a basis for evaluation. This shows that UPM both helps identify the strengths and weaknesses of every  activity, every aspect of the higher education institution. The system can provide universities with a basic set of indicators, serving as a strategic management tool and supporting quality accreditation.

UPM has supported and advised many universities in Vietnam and the ASEAN region to voluntarily participate, collect and appraise databases from many sources, including accreditation data.

According to Minister of Education and Training Phùng Xuân Nhạ, the University Performance Metrics (UPM)’s evaluation was very significant. First of all, as a data and analytics hub, UPM could provide consulting support to the national higher education system, as well as to local and regional higher education institutions. Higher education institutions could use UPM's criteria to self-assess their performance, and use it as a tool for strategic management, brand development, and partner development. Students had more accurate information about universities so that they could choose schools, select fields and professions that are suitable for their capacity and forte. Employers of companies also had the basis to develop human resources strategies, recruitment plans and intellectual transfer cooperation.

Aspects of the University of Sciences evaluated 5 stars by UPM were the size and quality of lecturers, reputation of faculties, scale of graduate training, quality of research, research and development, intellectual property, international publication, research and student start-up projects,...
In addition, student satisfaction in terms of training quality, students' employability after graduation, employer's satisfaction, etc. were also highly appreciated and recognized, earning 5 stars rating from UPM
