In 2014, Hanoi University of Science honored to be tasked by the Ministry of Education and Training is a unit to host and coordinate the Hanoi National University of Education holding its 46th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO).
On January 09th, 2014, the Steering Committee of the International Chemistry Olympiad consists of 11 members who are reputable chemists from 11 countries led by chairman Peter Wothers came to Vietnam to see the preparation for the exam. The meeting of the Steering Committee of the International Chemistry Olympiad took place at Hanoi University of Science (HUS) from 09 - 12/01/2014 is a very important meeting to discuss the content that related to the exam such as censoring exam, testing facilities (places of theory exam, practice exam; accommodation and meals of staff, students, ...); approving the new countries to attend the exam; updating IChO regulations, ...
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Duy Cam – Chair of 46th IChO organizing committee 2014 said, this is the first time Ministry of Education and Training assigned a University to hold International Olympiad. (Different from 2007 International Mathematical Olympiad and 2009 International Physics Olympiad hosted by Vietnam, Ministry of Education and Training was Chief organizer.)
The scientific committee who prepares exam has been established since 2012, including the talented chemists of Vietnam came from Hanoi University of Science, Hanoi National University of Education and the Institute of Chemistry. Chair of the scientific committee is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Noi - Rector of Hanoi University of Science said up to now, the scientific committee has prepared a bank of exams consists of 30 practical exams and 100 theoretical exams. The number has to meet the requirements and the quality was critical questioned by a number of domestic and foreign experts. However, the quality issues will be officially commented by the Steering Committee of International Chemistry Olympiad in this meeting. According to the path, Vietnam has to show at least 25 theoretical and 5 practical exams on the website at the end of January, 2014 for other countries to consult, know the content and difficulty level. This is a requirement for all host countries, while the official exam is secret, must be completed in July and was translated into English
Chair of the International Chemistry Olympiad, Mr. Peter Wothers said this is an international exam of large scale with the participation of about 320 talented contestants from many countries around the world. Therefore, the exam must be prepared carefully, the question must be suitable with the ability of the candidate. I am very pleased with the bank of exams that Vietnam has prepared, but also some exams are rather difficult and should be adjusted. In addition, venues, places to dining, accommodation and place for the contestants visit should be prepared carefully to provide the best conditions for the test and introduce the image of Vietnam to international friends.
The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is a chemistry exam for high school students under the age of 20 of all countries in the world, held annually since 1968 (except 1971).
Vietnam officially has attended the International Chemistry Olympiad since 1996 and in this exam, we always achieves high rankings in comparison with the other attended countries and territories.
IChO 2014 will be held with the participation of 80 delegations from 80 countries and territories that are invited in papers. Each group has a maximum of 8 members, including 01 head mentor, 01 mentor, 02 scientific observers and 04 students.
Contestants will take exam in two days, one day of theoretical test and one of practical exam. Location of theoretical test is at the My Dinh National Convention Centre, Hanoi; practice exam at Hanoi National University of Education.
The organization of the 46th International Chemistry Olympiad 2014 in Vietnam, is contributing to the better implementation of the foreign policy, integration policies of our Party and State, to strengthen the friendship and the exchanges between young teachers as well as chemistry teachers between countries; to encourage the understanding and international cooperation; to strengthen the cooperation with countries in the region and the world; to encourage and promote the learning movement in general and the Chemistry movement in particular in Vietnam youths; contributing to improve the strategy of enhancing people’ intellectual, training human resource, fostering talents of the our Party and State. The organization of the contest is an opportunity to advertise the image of the country, people and traditional culture of Vietnam to international friends.
